Indispensable Moving Tips

Packing all your favorite things into a box is far from simple, but it’s an art that you can master. Make your life a whole lot easier with these pro tips. We used them to make us Southern California’s favorite mover!

Tip #1: Pack Dishes on Edge – Contrary to what you may think, the best way to pack dishes is on their edges, so their weight is distributed more evenly. Stacking them on top of each other is putting your dishes at risk of cracking or being crushed. Avoid opening up a box of broken dishes by padding each plate’s edges with dishtowels, paper or old clothes and rags.

Tip #2: Put Heavy Items in the Smallest Box Possible – While you may be tempted to go for a record with huge boxes filled with heavy products, this is a recipe for disaster. The bigger the box is, the harder it is to handle. You don’t want your boxes slipping out of your movers’ grip, so stick to the smallest box possible for heavy items. Your movers will thank you!

Tip #3: Double Box Your Electronics – Think of each box as a layer of protection. If something is fragile, the best thing you can do is give it some extra security. For this reason, always double box anything that’s prone to breaking. Fill in any extra space with bed sheets, towels or clothing to keep fragile items from rattling during their journey.

Tip #4: No Matter How Weird the Shape is, Get it into a Box – No matter what baffling shape your possessions have, they will fit better in the truck inside a box or custom crate. Boxing oddly shaped items gives them better protection and makes it easier to pack efficiently inside the moving truck. For example, packing your garden tools and golf clubs into wardrobe boxes is a great way to safely and securely transport your items.

Tip #5: Don’t Forget to Label – When it comes to labeling, most people think that marking “fragile” gets the job done. This couldn’t be further from the truth. If you really want to move like a pro, you will label each box with it’s contents and final destination on the top and sides. Writing which room the box will end up in also helps save you and your movers a whole lot of work!
